Prof. Alan Petersen

Prof Alan Petersen is Professor of Sociology in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University. His research focuses on new and emerging health technologies, critical public health, the sociology of emotions, and the sociology of gender. His recent research includes analyses of stem cell tourism, biobanks, genetic governance, patient’s experiences, digital patient activism, and testing in national cancer screening programs and in healthcare. This research has been supported by the Australian Research Council, the MRFF, and other sources. His most recent books are: Stem Cell Tourism and the Political Economy of Hope (Palgrave, 2017), Digital Health and Technological Promise (Routledge, 2019) and Emotions Online: Feelings and Affordances of Digital Media (Routledge, 2023).
